OPPORTUNITY MIXED EVIDENCE

Report #072

February 22, 2004

This report contains a mixed bag of evidence drawn from the Mer-B (Opportunity) Mars rover official imaging science data. The above first image on the left demonstrates thin weather clouds in the atmosphere and what appears to be an old large heavily weather worn but originally artificially worked wood timber on the right.

LEFT IMAGE: As many of your know from previous reported evidence and comments, the sky in the Spirit and Opportunity rover imaging data is of very poor visual quality and demonstrates way too much severe JPEG compression artifacts effectively cutting way down on resolution and the ability to properly examine any suspected anomaly evidence. This does save file size space room for their presentation of this material on the Internet but it also renders the imaging essentially useless for the most part for any close research examination and analysis and no alternative access to the best raw imaging appears to be available. I've even written them about getting access but of course received no reply, as expected.

However, the above weather shot of atmospheric clouds appears on the surface to break this cycle by offering a much smoother sky appearance without the ever prevalent severe JPEG compression artifacts. Can it be? Unfortunately, the answer is no. So don't get your hopes up for a real look at anything in this image's sky.

The reality is that the perimeter edges of this image demonstrates that this smoother appearing sky scene is actually a coating applied over a more original severe JPEG compression artifact filled scene. At first, I'm sure like most everyone else, I assumed that it was the jagged edges often associated with curved image edges produced by enlarged pixel not adequately representing a curved edge line. Pixels are in the form of rigid geometric squares and that of course does not conform well to curved edges.

Closer examination reveals that it is in fact a smoother coating that went right up to but stopped just short of the perimeter edge leaving a tiny narrow band of the underlying original base canvass visible. Tiny pieces of the severe JPEG compression filled background can be seen in this tiny narrow band of the base canvass. Note in the above 300% enlargement insert in the main image outlined in green trim what I am talking about. They should have cropped the image again after the tampering application to eliminate this edge but of course didn't leaving this revealing and telling evidence of image tampering for us to view.

So it isn't the weather clouds in the sky that is real here, that is just artificially applied slight of hand illusion and misdirection to get us to thinking about atmospheric conditions rather than thinking about coatings and something probably much more profound and anomalous. The real issue here is what visuals could have been so important to cause them to take this special step to hide it, to warrant going a step beyond the normal severe JPEG compression reduction of resolution obfuscation technique? That would normally hide and/or distort almost anything but obviously they had no confidence in it here in this original scene and felt compelled to utilize this broad coating treatment as additional insurance.

Remember that obfuscation is hard evidence to and not to be ignored. What ever is being hidden here is likely so massive that it would have come through even the severe JPEG compression tactic. I can't say with any confidence what that might be without the visual evidence to support it but I of course have my suspicions and suspect many of you do as well.

RIGHT IMAGE: In the right half of the above first image is what appears to be nothing less than an old large artificially worked wood timber lying on the ground. Note the appearance of multiple right angle plains down its surface length suggesting an original squared geometry typical of large artificially worked wood timbers originally having gone through a milling process and note the 90º chopped off ends further supporting this consideration. When they try to tell you that this is just broken off long rock occurring by chance in this elongated geometric shape, take special note of the clear evidence of many sprung open grain and splits running down its length also very typical of substantially aged and heavily weather worn and dried out wood timbers lying exposed for long periods of time.

I have seen a lot of visuals like this in my time in lonely places. Especially at shorelines where such heavy construction timbers sometimes wash up. I am familiar with this look. Of course seeing something like this in a 2-D picture is not the same as seeing it 3-D in a natural environment. Still, the look is unquestionably there.

There is other timber evidence in other images but some are partially covered by the terrain and/or tampering confusing them with rocks and most are seen from a low to the ground level showing only a side facing the camera in heavy dark shadow and not supplying sufficient detail of lighted surfaces. I've included this image because the top of this particular timber and its grain pattern can be seen in lighted conditions better in addition to the normally seen dark shadow side. The shorter and darker partially buried object seen in the foreground may also be a timber but partially covered and can be more confused with rock evidence and so I can't call that one as something anomalous.

Now, if this is a artificially worked large heavily weathered wood timber laying on the ground as it appears to be, it does have all sorts of implications. For example, it implies origin in vegetation and forests on Mars as well as civilization doing the milling work, at least at some point in time. However, it does not necessarily follow that any of this is currently present because this timber may be heavily mineralized, petrified, only recently uncovered by winds, and could have been laying there since much more ancient times. I doubt it but it is possible.

The number "2" also seen at the center right side of this image definitely looks like a "2" on the ground, especially in the normal resolution more distant views. However, it appears to me to actually be something formed by a narrow string of dark image tampering application following some cracks in the rocks there. In other words, it may be artificially created but more likely inadvertently by the automated tampering software or someone here on Earth doing this image tampering but I doubt it is a artificial number two symbol native to Mars.

The above second image contains three similar visuals from three different images of a perfectly round disc shape on the ground with a donut size hole in the center. At first glance, it looks a lot like a CD-ROM disc with center hole. However, I do not believe that this is an object on the ground. Rather the evidence points to this being a depression pressed into the topsoil surface I suspect by the Mossbauer Spectrometer instrument housing face plate on the IDD (the Instrument Deployment Device) articulating arm on the Mer-B Opportunity rover and the donut hole shape by the recessed portion of the center area instrument within the housing face plate.

The face plate of this on board instrument is smaller and correct for this impression imprint shape in the Martian soil with a wide smooth surface face plate ring and a slightly recessed center hole. The on board APXS (Alpha-Particle-X-ray Spectrometer) instrument housing face on the same arm is larger and has a much more narrow outer ring with multiple recessed screws in its face that would imprint into the soil and a much larger and much deeper recessing opening. The RAT drill also on the arm has a uneven more complex ring device that doesn't even come close to looking like this impression imprint.

It should be pointed out that the Mossbauer Spectrometer instrument is designed as per official statements to determine the composition of iron bearing minerals and analyze any magnetic properties. According to official information, none of the on board instruments are actually design to detect the presence of current moisture itself, only if evidence of it has been present in more ancient times. This of course appears on the surface to be an illogical design approach but this is what information is being released. You must decide for yourself how much truth there may be to this or not.

LOWER RIGHT IMAGE: This impression imprint in the soil concept is confirmed by the disc shape in lower right image appearing in the wheel track tread imprinting in the soil there. Note the small raised lip casting a small shadow on the far side of the disc shape. This demonstrates a impression imprint in the soil since it is in the track and a relatively tender soil lip could not have survived intact and upright to cast that shadow if it was an object pressed into the soil by the tire passing over it. This clearly appears to be caused by the IDD articulating arm lowering the Mossbauer Spectrometer instrument face plate pressing into the soil of the track just made by the rover and probably doing some analysis in the newly disturbed soil there. This isn't the first impression imprint of this instrument face that has been seen in the rover tracks. Note an earlier image of the same disc shape imprint at the link below.

http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/all/1/p/055/1P133073444ESF06GQP2543L4M1.JPG

LOWER LEFT IMAGE: The lower left image demonstrates this same wide round disc shape with the donut hole in the middle at the base of a small shallow ledge. But, here it gives the surface appearance of being partially covered by soil and having been there for a long time and that would of course make it date before the rover landing. However, this is just a probable unintentional illusion. What appears to be dark soil at the base of this ledge passing over the disc shape is actually a dark dithering image tampering application following along this ledge's base and that is what is artificially partially covering the disc shape, not soil. This is evidence of the automated software doing this because it is doubtful that a person applying this would have overlooked this mistake.

TOP IMAGE: The top image is by far the most important here and the real reason for this particular reporting. First, we needed to understand the disc shape for the soil impression imprint it really is as opposed to an object. Then we needed to see how overlaid image tampering fields can affect the looks of something and create illusions as they mimic soil.

Now, in the top image, note how bright shiny and reflective the flat disc shape is down in the bottom of the impression imprint as compared with the other disc shaped imprints. I suspect this is reflective surface liquid seeping into this imprint filling its depression and creating the bright shiny effect. I suspect that it may have been the liquid that got their attention causing them to direct the instrument to test the spot to start with. However, someone is trying to hide this from us with skillful image tampering applications all around and partially over the disc shaped imprint trying to create an illusion of something more mundane and less provocative here.

Note how rounded top and smooth sided the walls of this impression imprint are. This is typical of liquid saturated soil (mud) as compared to the sharper edge subject to collapse in the rover's track imprints so typical of dryer soil. Another key to understanding here is that the soil all around this impression imprint has also been worked over with featureless smudge image tampering application mapping closely into the spaces between the small rocks and extending in a clearly seen shallow depression path or corridor off to the right and getting shallower as it moves more into the field of round spherical nodules. I believe this was to hide the evidence of more shallow liquid in this very shallow depression and this is probably what brought their attention and instrument to it to start with.

Don't let it be lost on you that the attempt to hide this evidence in turn implies that this evidence is probably water on the soil surface in a LIQUID state. There logically would be no need to hide the presence of other chemical compounds seeping out of the ground subject to freezing into solids or even water ice for that matter. On the other hand, LIQUID surface water indicators are no doubt taboo because such evidence sends the message that the temperature on the planet is not nearly as cold as heretofore officially reported and that would bring up all the other questions and issues about surface water on the planet and why this reality has been kept from everyone. What a duplicitous can of worms that could potentially be for someone painting themselves in such a corner with no place to escape.

The truth is that LIQUID water and in quantity enough to support life does exist on Mars clearly demonstrating that the temperature on the planet is not as cold as officially reported. Evidence of this will be presented in my first book with the liquid surface water evidence that I have been holding back. That is, if I can ever get time to attend to polishing it off with some updated additions. Don't worry, all this will be more readily apparent as future hard visual evidence is eventually released.

The above third and the below fourth images with upper and lower comparison scenes demonstrate evidence that mostly speaks for itself. What you are looking at, or at least appear to be seeing, in these images of two different physical sites, one above and the other below, is a fairly steep rise in the terrain in front of the camera with the camera looking slightly up at it. This a story of super obvious image tampering demonstrated here. I include this just to convince any fence straddlers with irrefutable evidence that this type of thing is really going on in this imaging. It is so visually crystal clear as is the intent that produced it that anyone should be able to see it and I can't really imagine an exception. Basically, this is preverbal and conclusive "GOTCHA!!!" imaging.

TOP IMAGES: The top scene in each of the above third and fourth images demonstrates a rise in the near terrain. Note that all visuals within these top scenes of each image demonstrates soil, rocks, etc. with no sky visible. Note that the upper part of these scenes may be blurred and indistinct but they are still clearly meant to convey the impression that all detail within this image is geological terrain and not just some fuzzy "something" and certainly there is no horizon or sky visible. Further, this extends up much further in each image than the relatively narrow horizontal slice of it I have shown here. This clearly defines intent.

BOTTOM IMAGES: The bottom scenes in each of these images on the other hand demonstrates the exact same scene but now with the soil, rocks, terrain detail in the top areas removed and clear sky and a sharply distinct horizon line substituted. Nothing could be clearer evidence of visual image tampering and the intent to create illusions and mislead.

This obviously can't even remotely be passed off as accidental unavoidable image transmission, processing or compression artifacts. The crystal clear and only goal here is to intentionally create illusion, mislead and deceive. Further, this demonstrates the mapping ability of the tampering software that I've been telling you about for so long mapping precisely down to the smallest rocks in order to cut out the top area and create the too sharp horizon line. This same software mapping technology also allows smudge applications mapped to and applied to individual rocks and the soil interspaces between them generally obscuring surfaces of most of the general real geology. I might add that color can and is then also applied to the back of this mapping as needed.

This kind of fine precision is enabled by digital super resolution technology where the tampering software can operate very close and onto any object in fine detail including even tiny ones. However, this fact is visually obscured by a variety of tampering techniques mapped in layers at different resolution levels. The whole is then drawn back to a more distant poorer resolution view and then that is the official but mostly fake "science data" released for review.

In the above two over and under images, there is no telling which scene is real and which is not. Actually, I suspect that neither are real and both are completely fake and false. I suspect something entirely different than both is being hidden here and there has just been confusion as to which false imagery to use to eliminate it and both were mistakenly posted conflicting with each other. For example, most of the grainy pattern foreground in the rest of these images is, in my opinion, also dithering smudge image tampering applications obscuring something more there. There has also been a general reduction in resolution in both images rendering them very vague and diffuse in general quality to further obscure such manipulations. Only the posting mistake of conflicting visuals reveals some truth.

This evidence was an earlier original discovery of mine that I had been saving back for some time anticipating a future mixed evidence presentation like this one on rover evidence. However, as sometimes happens when I do that over too much time, during the meantime someone else has picked up on this in some excellent investigative work and beat me to the punch in reporting on it. That work can be found at the link below.

http://www.xenotechresearch.com/NASAHACK.htm

This person's reporting does a good job and is in sufficient depth, so I'm not going to go into that kind of depth here in this report since it saves me some reporting time and space. Be sure to check it out and don't forget to click the "NEXT" link at the bottom for the second page and more. You will also see some more spots in the sky evidence on the second page to. There are actually quite a few of these objects in the sky as seen from the rover's cameras but I've declined to report on them further because they so far do not offer any more information beyond when I first reported on them. The severe JPEG compression takes care of that. Still, you may be interested to see more of them again.

The above fifth image demonstrates two separate and very strange anomalies. As you can see, the strangest thing about these two objects, other than their similarities, is that both appear to have something very light colored but not necessarily light reflective sticking tall and upright out of a dark low base area in the terrain. If these were real visuals, we would be looking at something very much unknown here. If this represented technology, it would be technology well beyond anything even remotely known to us. Are you beginning to get the creeps yet?

Well don't! The truth is that I do not believe anything about these visuals. Why? Certainly not because they look so strange as that does not bother me. Rather, for one thing because the small thumbnail images (not shown here) that link and lead to these images show clear rectangular sectional perimeters identified by JPEG compression artifacts clustering around these objects within the overall small thumbnail image. This can happen when too much JPEG compression is used causing the clustering effect around objects or data that has subsequently been added into the image or when something has been removed from the image or both. As additional evidence of this same thing, look very close and note how JPEG compression artifacts are clustering around the lower right object with its 200% zoom factor. I suspect this object is not original to this image.

As with so much of the Spirit and Opportunity imaging, distant views are often completely obscured with image tampering applications that mimic the look of terrain. Often the more distant horizon, skylines, hills, and flat appearing plains are mostly just image tampering applications. The strange objects here are in distant views and sit in what appears to be essentially featureless sloped plains. However, this to is an illusion and the easiest to do in hiding distantly seen information. There is no real geology visible around these objects, only broad image tampering fields mimicking geological plain terrain. Once this is understood, what is the chance that real objects as strange and provocative as these would be left out of the middle of such extensive tampering fields?

Then there is the fact that the light color aspect of these objects is super bright but offers no reflectivity factor into the camera lens. I suspect that what we are looking here is that ALL of these distant visuals have been artificially created by image tampering. On the bright white part of the objects, it is probably accomplished by emptying pixels immediately adjacent to each other of information leaving only this blank white behind. Note how the tallest light color top spires, two on the left and a single one on the right, follow the straight vertical pixel lines creating the illusion of peaked looking objects.

I suspect that this was entirely intentional on someone's part creating something very mysterious and a potential generator of debate but which is ultimately unresolvable and can never come to anything conclusive because it ultimately isn't anything real. In other words, misdirection but toward false unresolvable issues rather than something more familiar and recognizable like weather clouds in the sky in the first image of this report.

So, except for the possible timber and water evidence, this has been a report mostly about image tampering. That is the way it is in this Spirit and Opportunity imaging. To find anything possibly real, one cannot just simply examine the imaging for anomalies, one must also deal with all this massive image tampering trying not only to hide evidence directly but also trying to deceive and misdirect with artificially created illusions. Worse, they are very successful at it and it takes many hundreds of images and the rejection of much evidence to produce just a little potentially real anomalous evidence that one can have some measure of confidence in.

WIRED MAGAZINE ARTICLE

A recent broad focus article about Mars evidence appeared in the August, 2004 issue of Wired Magazine titled "Mars Gone Wild" by Erik Davis and it refers to myself and this Web site and its evidence briefly in a couple of paragraphs. The electronic version of the article can be found at the following link.

http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/12.08/mars.html

In it the author associates me with "...claustrophobic commentary that scrolls on endlessly..." Even if a bit true, how does one convey all of the complexities of this satellite imaging evidence including its obfuscation, illusion and misdirection aspects without trying to present as much decent understanding as possible? Believe me, it is not an easy task.

By the way, the article also states that I say "...NASA is tampering with the Mars images..." This is false and I never said any such thing to them. I couldn't have even if I had been so inclined (which I'm not) because I declined to participate in any interview at all and declined permission to use any of my material as well. I most definitely do not say that NASA is doing this or accuse them of this. I cannot know the truth of that. However, at the same time, someone is definitely doing this in the science data somewhere at official level and NASA is the entity with primary responsibility for the data.

Likewise, the article goes on to state that "...Most of the smudges he points to look like artifacts caused by data compression; when Wired asked for clarification, refused to comment, citing nameless "adversaries..." Again, there was no interview and such a exchange never took place at all. All communication was 100% in writing, fully documented, and this can be proven. It is amazing how people will be so inaccurate and just put words in someone's mouth and then develop a completely fictitious scenario around that, apparently to serve their own private agendas.

Very quickly after I was approached for an interview by these people, I detected what I perceived to be duplicitous behavior, became suspicious of their intentions, and declined to participate well before any interview process could take place. I suspect they didn't like my independent attitude and did what they could to take a shot or two at me. Since they had nothing to work with, they apparently decided to invent something that could convey a negative impression.
